Things that you should know while dining in a restaurant in Nepal

by anamika on March 14, 2009

Here is the list of things that you should know when you go to a restaurant in Nepal:

1) Ask if the restaurant charges VAT on the price quoted on the menu (some restaurants charge it while others do not and the tax is 13 percent). Most of the restaurants charge an additional service tax of 10 percent on the quoted prices. So, you might not need to leave tips at the restaurants.
2) The etiquette in most of the restaurants is similar to those generally followed in the west.
3) Some restaurants which offer Nepali setup offer places where you need to sit cross legged on a cushion on the floor instead of sitting on a chair. You will feel comfortable if you take off your shoes.

4) Some restaurants offer the services of deaf people as waiters. You might have to use sign language to order menu (if you do not know the sign language, then you can point the item on the menu with your fingers).

5) Ask if the hotel accepts cards for payments. If they do not, then cash enough money beforehand.
